Customer Overview

Sibros and AWS team up to power largest two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturer's new electrified product with world-class connected vehicle platform.

Our customer is one of the largest two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturers in the world and well-known for their commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and innovation. They have a presence in over 70 countries, with a wide range of products, including scooters, motorcycles, and auto rickshaws.

The customer had plans to launch a new electrified two-wheeler product. Their aims were to accelerate product time to market and create an outstanding ownership experience by equipping the vehicles with a world-class connected vehicle platform.

A Call for Change

Unlocking the Power of Data to Deliver a Personalized Driving Experience

Connectivity and data-driven decision-making are becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry, especially for two-wheelers. This OEM’s aim was to harness data from their two-wheelers to gain insights on vehicle performance and driver behavior. This would in turn enable them to make better decisions regarding the design and development of products and services. In order to monitor the vehicle's data communications, access real-time diagnostics and performance information, and send commands to the vehicle, this OEM needed secure bi-directional data flow from the vehicle to the cloud. They also needed a mechanism by which data could be analyzed to provide personalized services and experiences to drivers across different regions.

Automated, Cloud-Based Solution for OTA Updates

The more connected two-wheelers become the more important it is to have a reliable way to deliver software updates and keep data secure. The customer’s team identified a need to have a cloud-based platform that can facilitate the unhindered and secure administration of OTA updates and a secure connection that guarantees the integrity of the data transferred. Additionally, they required a large-scale storage system, high-speed delivery network, and a machine learning platform to ensure the quick and effective transfer of firmware and raw data, as well as the abstraction of valuable knowledge. Having these abilities would enable them to enhance the quality, proficiency, and relevancy of forthcoming updates.

In summary, the customer required a scalable end-to-end solution for managing OTA updates and vehicle data in an efficient, secure, and cost-effective way.

Authentication-Based Communication & Data Exchange - In One Place

OEMs have continuously been challenged to create a productive means of combining and managing multiple in-vehicle systems. This is especially challenging when the systems are owned by disparate organizations which might hinder cooperation. Our customer required a single connected vehicle solution that was able to integrate with four distinct systems. These were their manufacturing application, finance and invoicing application, their centralized dealer management system, and their telecom vendor portal. In order to guarantee an effective and safe workflow, the integration needed to ensure secure, authentication-based communication and bi-directional data exchange between the connected vehicle platform solution and these systems.

The Approach

Sibros recommended a product-based approach for rapid integration and deployment. This included lower program risk and costs in comparison with the Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) approach. Sibros’ comprehensive connected vehicle solution is not dependent on third-party hardware, cloud, or telecom providers. Its applications were developed over a distributed system that is designed for horizontal scalability, portability, and abstraction, while allowing them to run seamlessly on all major cloud platforms.

State of the Art Ecosystem

Sibros provided the state-of-art ecosystem solution with the following key components to the customer:

· In-vehicle embedded software that resides on the telemetry unit. This software includes the Deep Logger, Deep Updater, and the Sibros Armor Security framework.
· Highly scalable and secure Sibros Cloud that hosts data from the vehicle, firmware and software packages with advanced distribution via a content delivery network (CDN). Sibros Cloud provides the connectivity hub between the web-based applications, mobile app, and the vehicle.
· User-friendly mobile application encompassing vehicle management, ride/trip history, alerts/notifications, service management, OTA updates, and makes other advanced features  available to the end consumers.
· A sophisticated web portal providing comprehensive features for all stakeholders including the customer’s service admins, the vehicle service center, the fleet management team, insurance agencies, and financial agents.
· IEEE-compliant cybersecurity framework that provides protection against multiple forms of attacks and intrusions.
· Seamless integration and deployment of Sibros products on the customer’s vehicles and network, as well as integration with external systems including their manufacturing application, finance & invoicing application, centralized dealer management system (CDMS) and telecom solutions, all of which require to access the data while providing key functions to the end user.
· L2 software support to ensure knowledge transparency and the transition of all operations to the customer’s key personnel. This includes daily support on any findings and bug fixes that prohibit the successful operation of the solution.

Vehicle-to-Cloud Architecture

Sibros provided a fully integrated, end-to-end hardware agnostic solution that enables the customer to connect with their end users and vehicles through the cloud. We designed this solution with a software-first approach and incorporated best practices from the software development industry.

The following principles were utilized when configuring the customer’s auto systems:
· Scalability: The platform is horizontally scalable and designed to support millions of connected vehicles.
· Security: By utilizing the Uptane security framework, our platform ensures everything from package distribution to cloud-vehicle communication and data storage are handled securely.
· Flexibility: Sibros’ in-vehicle software architecture is modular with high cohesion and low coupling which enables efficient integration into our customer’s platform.
· Availability: The system is always online and has sufficient redundancy in place to guard against a single point of failure.
· Efficiency: Sibros’ connected vehicle platform leverages compression, batching, and cloud-native solutions which allow the customer to transmit and process data in the most cost-effective manner possible.
· Data Localization: All critical data is stored and processed within the country it’s serving to comply with local and international regulatory requirements.

Sibros leverages AWS to better support their customers needs while relying on Amazon expertise to handle most of the infrastructure efforts. Sibros relies on serverless technologies, such as Lambdas, to ensure the ability to cope with traffic spikes when more vehicles are on the road. These include:
- Amazon Lambdas
- Amazon RDS
- Amazon EKS
- Amazon Kinesis

These services ensure the platform is always operating at the maximum capacity regardless of traffic fluctuations.

The Mobile App and Web Portal

The mobile app and web portal are the key interfaces for the customer’s stakeholders and users. With our extensive domain experience, Sibros worked closely with the customer’s auto business unit and engineering teams to address pain points and provide the best experience for the end user.

The mobile app leverages React Native to unify interfaces across various mobile platforms. It is integrated with our cloud infrastructure and third-party systems to offer a best-in-class user experience.

Key features include:
· Trips and analytics: Trip Analytics provides users with a better understanding of ride behavior. Vehicle-generated on things such as ignition status and location-based events are collected by the OTA data logging software on the vehicle’s TCU.
· Battery details and vehicle diagnostics: Improve the customer ownership experience with real-time fault detection and diagnostic alerts. See battery level, available range, real-time charge status, and diagnostic alerts.
· Vehicle information and OTA updates: Manage OTA update notification, user consent, and installation of the latest firmware on the vehicle.

The Outcome

Accelerated Journey to Connected Vehicle Success
Sibros’ dynamic platform enables the customer to remotely repair and upgrade software and firmware which has significantly reduced the costs associated with recalls and warranty repairs. Deep Connected Platform also empowers the customer to create and rapidly deploy an almost limitless suite of software-based features and services. The scalable nature of the platform enabled the customer to accelerate the launch of their two-wheelers and three-wheelers across different geographies.

Creating New Revenue Streams
The customer was able to create new revenue streams by leveraging over-air-updates to bring data-driven services and enhanced vehicle functionality to end users.

Millions of BEV Savings with A Reductive Design
With the data the customer collected via Sibros’ Deep Logger they discovered that the majority of their customers were re-charging the battery to 60%. This has led them to believe the battery is oversized. With that in mind, the company intends to reduce battery size in future vehicle builds which will save them millions in build costs per year.
